I may have mentioned that the Lutheran parish with which I've come to affiliate myself is engaged in combining with the parish in Malden. Malden is joining many other communities in having a Porch Fest. My friend Greta plays in a recorder ensemble, and they're considering playing for the Porch Fest, so I'm going to arrange a couple of my pieces to suit: Surfing an Earthquake (for three recorders) and Yesterday's Snow (for three recorders and bassoon.)

I play in a couple of area porchfests. I'd suggest some form of amplification. Playing outside is less than ideal acoustically for recorders, and porchfest crowds are usually on the boisterous side.

Sound advice, so to speak!

As noted before, Crazy in a Bottle got the cold shoulder from the Call I wrote it for (not to whine over that.) This week I saw a call from a group in Harlem for pieces for 1-8 bass clarinets, so I modified into that scoring. Hence, the Op. 194a.

No more actual work today, but I investigated the range of the various recorders.

Pardon, but what is a "porch fest"?

Usually on a Saturday, residents offer their front porches, yards, etc. for groups to perform. A variety of singers and/or instrumentalists sign up to play for what is generally an all day affair. People walk around the neighborhood to check out different porchfest locations, so you generally find these events happening in urban areas. They're lots of fun, but due to barking dogs, crying babies, and lively conversation, loud volume acts tend to work best.

Wooster Outreach Update:

I've not heard back from the director of the Wooster Chorus, but then, they are about to head out on their traditional Spring Break tour, so they must be busy. I'm making a mental note to follow up at the tour's end.
I may or may not have reported that I got an automated reply that my message to the chap whom, meseemed, the website listed as director of the Scot Symphonic Band ... that my message failed. I called the Music Dept Office to try to sort it out, I was shunted to voice-mail, and I did leave a message. I just got a very nice call from someone in the office. The upshot is that the chap I sent e-mail to is no longer with C.O.W. and I was apprised of the current director, and have thus appropriately redirected my query.

I shall be a footnote in your critical biography. Doctoral students will investigate me. A programme note will remark that I looked strangely like Oswald von Wolkenstein.
