There is some music playing in the background, it sounds like a slowish orchestral march. I do not recognize it. Could that be an early/obscure Beethoven piece or something the young Beethoven might have heard from a contemporary?

I now received the information that this is apparently the march by some Ernst Christoph Dressler about which the 11-year-old Beethoven wrote his first printed piece, a set of 9 variations for piano WoO 63. I have no idea if this is the original instrumentation of Dressler or if it was arranged for the movie.
