TV: Yle Teema & Fem: Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra Concert

Thomas Adès: Aquifer
Henri Dutilleux: Cello Concerto (Tout un monde lointain)
Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor

Tomas Nuñez, cello
Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra
Nicholas Collon

At the beginning conductor Nicholas Collon dedicated this concert to Leif Segerstam who sadly passed away on Wednesday. Adès' Aquifer is a very new work commissioned by Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra to mark the inaugural season of their new Chief Conductor, Sir Simon Rattle, who conducted the UK premiere. Apparently Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra is the second orchestra in the World performing the work.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Quote from: JBS on October 11, 2024, 08:12:56 AMThe only other completely complete set I know of is this. I've never heard a note from it, and have no idea if it's available to stream.

I have and rather like Podger/Cooper. I also have Mutter/Orkis, Capucon/Armstrong, and Szeryng/Haebler. I can't say I have a strong preference for any particular one of them.

Boskowski / Kraus is also completely complete. It includes even the spurious "Romantic" sonatas.

Radu Lupu's Tokyo 1987 concert with solo Mozart and Chopin, excellent sound, satisfying performances especially in the soulful slow pieces. Well worth seeking out and hearing when you're up for the music.

He's 81 years old.

Huh. This was pretty good.

Again, pretty good listening despite the late hour.

Quote from: Harry on October 11, 2024, 04:07:20 AMWilliam Walton (1902–1983).
Viola Concerto original version (1928–9)

Edmund Rubbra (1901–1986).
Meditations on a Byzantine Hymn for solo viola Op 117, (1962)
Viola Concerto in A major Op 75 (1952).

Lawrence Power, Viola.
BBC Scottish SO, Ilan Volkov.
Recorded at City Hall, Glasgow, on 16 and 17 September 2006 (concertos) and Henry Wood Hall, London, on 27 September 2006 (Meditations on a Byzantine Hymn).

Both Viola Concertos I like enormously, and certainly in such fine performances and sound. The Meditations were unknown to me, but it a huge draw into the world of Rubbra. A work of religious and solemn aspects. This release brings together three major pieces by two outstanding and highly individual English composers and is Prime quality time for my ears and mind.

A friend brought a library copy of this to listen to. I liked it so much I ended up buying it. A truly remarkable release.

I haven't heard that CD; however, I have at least two others of him playing Mozart which I enjoy (one with Previn--four hands).

Oof, I never get tired of hearing the strings come back in between 5-6 min on the Sibelius concerto. I probably say it every time I post this piece, no matter who is playing it.

Kalevi Aho: Concerto for Timpani and Orchestra (2015)
Erkki Lasonpalo, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra
Ari-Pekka Mäenpää (Timpani)

I don't think I have ever heard a timpani concerto. Might follow this one up with Aho's piano concerto on the same album.
