I like what I've heard of Jennifer Higdon so far. Her Viola Concerto is worth having.

Quote from: Florestan on April 24, 2023, 12:22:12 PMBtw, and relating to the concerts thread: I've been listening to Mahler's 1st twice during the last two editions of Enescu Festival --- not by my choice but by being invited to attend. If this year I'll be invited one more time (they'll be playing M1 twice this year, go figure!) I'll decline, much as I like it.  ;D

I almost never get to hear Mahler live because no matter where I live I've always attended local concerts and they rarely have enough musicians to tackle Mahler.  I had a chance to hear the first this season, but I was too busy.  The only Mahler works I've heard live are Das Lied von der Erde and the second symphony.

Thread duty.  Some charming piano trios.  Don't think I've ever heard anything by Pleyel before.

Hi David - been a big fan of Pleyel - my collection attached (about 20 CDs) - the Prussian Quartets are worth hearing - also a Pleyel Society w/ a lot of information.  Dave :)

Mahler is one of my favorite composers, and I've sadly never seen anything of his in concert. The ASO is doing the 5th symphony in a few months, so hopefully I will make it to that. I'm still kicking myself for passing on the 8th a few years ago, back when I thought the 8th was "not for me"; now, it's my favorite of them all.

Edit: Actually, Mahler's 5th is a week from Thursday, and I got my ticket :D

Can you come to Ohio on May 27th?

The Cincinnati Symphony is performing Mahler's Eighth Symphony at 7:30 P.M.!!!  Tickets from $50.00 ( a bargain!) are still available!

Great acoustics, no matter where you sit!

Wow, maybe! I've got a cousin in Cincinnati who might let me crash on his couch, and it's only about a 7 hour drive for me ;D

Thanks!

Harris: String Quartet No. 2 'Three Variations on a Theme'

I'm not much of a fan of this composer, but this work is definitely interesting and worth listening.

Could be worse.  In grad school I had tickets for the Pacifica Quartet performing some Beethoven late string quartets.  I forgot about the tickets and the concert and missed the performance!!

On the drive back from Clemson University, where the orchestra played a piece of mine, we stopped in Charlottesville (I wanted to show my wife and mom-in-law UVa ... I kind of wonder, now, how I managed to park by Old Cabell Hall) and by the strangest coincidence, the orchestra was playing a concert, and we heard the finale of the Mahler First. At Symphony Hall in Boston, I've heard Ozawa lead the Sixth, and the rightly disgraced Levine lead the Ninth.

Beethoven: Piano Sonata #5, Op. 10/1

This was a lot of fun! I liked the moment in the development of the 3rd movement where Beethoven introduces a theme similar to the opening of his 5th symphony.

Nielsen: Springtime in Funen, for soloists, chorus, children's chorus and orchestra

A pretty work, but not much more than that I'm afraid.

He's a superb player and is captured in excellent sound on this SACD.
