On top of Saturn. Just yesterday.

Look at that detail! :o Serenity comes to mind when one generally thinks of this planet. But not with a photo like this. It's one of the most incredible (and that seems to be a word everyone's using) astrophotos I've seen recently.

More here, here and here.

Florestan

When I'm creating at the piano, I tend to feel happy; but - the eternal dilemma - how can we be happy amid the unhappiness of others? I'd do everything I could to give everyone a moment of happiness. That's what's at the heart of my music. — Nino Rota

Weird how I just realized that was in Spanish after I finished reading it...

I think if they had an English version of that, the first one would have to be replaced with Santa Claus. It's all being taught wrong stuff when you're a kid, although it's understandable why. Would be nice to live in a world where children aren't murdered in the street every day, etc... nice to be innocent and ignorant for a while, I suppose.

Mahler, you ought to go see it.

Rather than portending the supposed destruction of the world, it would more apt at mid-night between the 21st and 22nd, as the myth comes to a stu... stut....stuttering close.

Okay, up first: it's mere co-incidence that I'm posting an image of a moving star on Christmas eve. ;D

On a serious note: this series of images, the oldest of which dates back to the 20s, shows the motion of star with the Ring Nebula in the background. This movement was discovered accidentally by an amateur astronomer while he was creating a new image of the aforementioned nebula.

More here.

And yes, she "nailed" the landing on the beam, which (I have read) has the width of an "i-phone."

Astonishing to think about how these gymnasts do these unbelievable things.

Bogey

Considering that beam is 4 inches across, I would have trouble walking across it.
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

Yeah, I would too, but, then again, I'm no toothpick. :D

Thread duty:

I like this picture of Elgar:

I must say Sir Ed carries that 'stache with grace and dignity, not something every man can do.  What is that style of moustache called?
