Someone once said that the Grateful Dead played on a level that was not only unreachable for others, but one that others didn't even know existed. Thousands of hours of tapes remain, freely available to fans, and this is the best epitaph for Phil, who joined Jerry now and for ever.

     That was true for their radical period in the late '60s. Around 1970 they started producing very accessible music that reached a wide audience.

I believe it was 70s. The second half of the 60s was a period of experimentation and exploration. Starting with Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, they found their ideal balance of freedom and control, and the 70s became their prime period. Many deadheads have different favorite years, most often citing such years as '72, '73, '74, '77, and '78.
