There are various *flea markets around the city [I think that this may be what you are referring to--rather than "garage sales".  You might also try googling "record fairs" and see whether or not there will be any going on while you are there.

*It's been ages since I've been to the Big Apple, so I'm not the best one to ask.  Hope that you have a good time!
