Quote from: JBS on September 26, 2024, 05:25:05 PMIt's already well north of me--we had a very windy cloudy day on the Atlantic side, but nothing bad.

I think the GMGer most directly in the storm path is @Mirror Image although it should be considerably weakened by the time it gets to him. I'm guessing he's busy checking the trees around his house, given what happened the last storm he went through.

ETA: looking at the rain forecast, it looks like South Carolina will get more rain than South Florida

Quote from: DavidW on September 26, 2024, 05:50:49 PMWe just had a tropical cyclone last week, and it rained so much that my big dog bowl went from empty to filled up in a day. There will be 45-50 mph gusts when I drive into work tomorrow morning.
Hard to watch all of the damage being done--particularly in areas like Atlanta, GA and Asheville, NC.  :(

Wonder how @Mirror Image is doing?  I believe also that power was knocked out for a lot of folks in the state.

As an aside:  if I'm recalling correctly, he had a lot of his CDs stored in the basement (or was that @drogulus ?).  If so, that could be a disaster!  But again, no idea as to where in Georgia he and his parents live.  Hope that they're all o.k.

Just dumbfounded by all of the rain and flooding in Asheville--which I've heard described as a "catch basin" (due to where it is located).  :(

It could be, but basements are pretty rare in this region, perhaps for that apparent reason.

I've come out of hibernation to thank you for your concern (and @JBS as well). I truly appreciate this post and wanted to let you know (and others who genuinely care) that we are all fine and that Helene had missed us. It is correct that this hurricane was directly in our path, but we're incredibly fortunate that all we received was heavy rain and some sporadic high wind.

Also, I want to let you know that I know what member you are and I want to tell you I'm sorry for my post to you in the Debussy composer thread. It was out-of-line and simply uncalled for and I hope we can forget about it and move forward.

Hi K - welcome back - Asheville is a shocking mess, just 2 hours from us in the Piedmont and one of many NC mountain places we've visited often (attached video showing damage in just one area) at least 35 people dead - despite being a mountain city, there are numerous rivers that flood in heavy rains, especially the French Broad (passing though the Biltmore Estate), and the towns are mainly built in the valleys.

As for us, we just had < 2 inches of rain and a little wind - no power outage where we live but some fallen trees causing issues elsewhere - lucky miss.  Dave :)

Florida and France will be dealing with hurricanes almost simultaneously this week.212936_most_likely_toa_34.jpg203735_most_likely_toa_34.jpg

I had heard recently about Milton, but not about Kirk.  I know a couple effected by Helene (*who live in Asheville) and others who might be effected by Milton (have a place in western Florida and had damage not too long ago to their home).

*No water nor power.  Damage to Asheville:  immense.

I also know someone in the Tampa Bay area (north of Tampa though) who is fretting quite nervously about Milton. He lives well away from the coast, but a direct hit would still cause a lot of wind damage.

I just checked the Weather Channel:  Milton has been upgraded to a Cat 5.   :o  :(

My friends have a home round about the Fort Myers' area.

What is the news about Kirk?

What???? It was a Cat 2 just this morning. Or do you mean they're *expecting* it to become a Cat 5?

From what I understand, as of now it is a Cat 5.  Who knows what it will become when it hits land?

News was from recent Weather Channel info (current).

Just checked some French website. Only talking about 80mph winds and heavy rain for wed/Thu. Will cross from centre west to centre east.

80 is pretty darn strong!  Wonder what they are talking about for Ireland and the UK too?

That's a category 1 hurricane.
However because of the latitude it will be called an extra-tropical cyclone.
