Just got my lifetime Mozart fix via UPS today, the Brilliant 170 disc set. For a casual classical music fan like myself I don't see how these complete sets can be beat. As suggested various places I immediately (after inserting disc 1 into the player) checked every disc to make sure none were missing and there were no doubles. No problems there. Whether any have audio problems will take some time to be determined. I'm a bit of a completist when I get into something so I love having this little box stuffed with cds (minor eye candy to be sure) and knowing Mozart's work is all there. Costco has the set for an even 100 right now, plus 5$ for non members and just over 7$ for shipping (U.S). Ordered Sunday night and arrived today (Wed.). Time to switch to disc 2.

I recently got this set as well.  I am very pleased with what I have heard so far.  I still need to listen to the operas and smattering of other pieces.  However, instead of this set making me feel as I have a complete set (though I believe there are some fragments missing), it just makes me want to buy even more interpretations of certain pieces I thouroughly enjoy and especially in the realm of HIP recordings.  In short, an excellent set, for a very fair price, that is not the end all IMO.  ;)

And welcome to GMG, OzRadio (interesting screen name).

A wonderful set, indeed, surely the best classical music investment I ever made @ less than $100. I repeatedly return to it with great joy. Just listening yet again to the superb piano trio disc licensed from BIS.

I fail to understand how can one swallow the amount of music in such a huge set, it will take you a lifetime of listening.  ;D

Congratulations. I see it's a bargain. What are the highlights of the set?

At 33, hopefully I have many years to enjoy this monstrosity. Having only listened to four discs so far, I can't speak much to highlights. I've listened to the first three discs of symphonies (1, 4, 5, 6, 45, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17) each twice; certainly enjoyable but nothing that stood out. I then skipped to the first disc of concertos (concertos for harpsichord, 2 violins & basso continuo) KV 107 No. 1, 2, and 3, and am on my third listening of these. They've really caught my attention.

Just bear in mind that Mozart starts hitting his stride around K350 or so. There are many wonderful earlier works, such as the violin concertos in the K210s, and the remarkable piano concerto K271 (#9), but I think you'll really start to see a major transformation with the works he wrote in the last ten years of his life.

Those are tremendous, and I'd like also to mention the early String Trios and Duos.

You will not regret the purchase Ange.  I am biding my time for the Haydn release and still keeping an eye on that recent Beethoven set.

I have not heard many comments about the Beethoven from Mark.  Maybe time to re-open that old thread he started.

Are Beethoven and Bach the only other complete Brilliant sets right now? I expect those two to be my next purchases down the road. Beethoven's probably my favorite based on very limited classical listening and Bach is the wife's favorite.

I believe that is it at this time.  Maybe Harry has some inside info on the Haydn release.  Just for fun Oz, do you know my avatar?

I don't recognize the picture offhand; looks like the cover of an old pulp magazine or early radio magazine, ca. 1920s. Have been curious about it.

Does the complete Mozart have any hip recordings?  And if so comments on the performances?

OzRadio

I seem to remember reading reviews before I purchased the set reviewers "warning" that it has many HIP recordings which may be a turn off to some. I'm not familiar enough with HIP to make an informed comment, but I've loved everything I've heard so far, about a dozen discs.
