Quote from: Karl Henning on March 22, 2025, 12:32:19 PMI wrote back to ask if he might consider programing it. I also mentioned In the Artist's studio (the piece for harp and 17 winds.) Let's see.
Well, he has made me welcome to send him the Op. 107. I also sent him the video for Out in the Sun.

Quote from: Kalevala on March 22, 2025, 10:18:00 AMWhat is CRWE?  And perhaps call one of the two people that you had mentioned today to see if they might be willing to give you a lift home?

Well, rather typically, The Ride got me here more than an hour early. Of course, that's better than late. And I've got a comfortable armchair to sit in, and a cup of filtered water, so  let me not complain!
And, Greta & Eric will bring me home afterwards.

I guess I just do not frequent large parking lots. This is really the first "snow-plough sierra" I've seen this season. I doubt I'll be by to document it, but I expect some of this will last to 1 May.

Had a super conversation with Matt, a plain meeting of the minds. I asked him if he had any reservations about my Opus 148, and he plainly said: "It's half a program!" But he says he has no musical reservations about my piece, and as he's about to consider the '25-'26 season, he said he'll dive back into it. So, even if he doesn't program the Symphony (and he may, yet) we've talked it up. Now the only problem (if it is a problem): I'm ready to write a new smaller-scale piece for the group. When my desk is clear, I have an Opus 200.

Quote from: Karl Henning on March 23, 2025, 03:26:05 AMAnd you were right.

Yesterday, Eric followed up: I read through "When Jesus Wept" today, and discovered that I'd lied--most of those dynamic changes that are indicated when the pedals are active are indeed possible. The other good news is that I hear nothing that would give the bluehairs heart attacks. The pastor doesn't yet know if there will be a good Friday service, but if there is, this would be a perfect prelude. If not, I'll use it for the last Sunday of Lent. So thanks again! Not only is it beautiful, but it's also "mission-related", as we used to say in the Army!

Excellent news!  I did not think his initial reaction was accurate, but organists can be mercurial at times, in my experience!

"Bluehairs"!!!  ;D    I am reminded of the days, when we had moved to a Jewish area of Dayton (i.e. three synagogues could be found rather close by), and often when I was on the local bus to high school, two cute little women with blue hair, identical twin sisters, late 50's or early 60's, always dressed most elegantly, would get on the bus in front of the Temple Israel Synagogue.  (I was often on the bus in high school and college, as I refused to drive for a long time).

Anyway, they not only fit the stereotype, they were the stereotype!  8)

Hey, Karl, you have created a new genre: The Neo-Medieval Blues!  ;)  The occasional F natural is a nice touch!

Even in a recorder ensemble, how can you not have the occasional "blue note?"

Listened to this again, and at the end, YouTube carried me right to Discreet Erasures, which was delightfully abrupt!

I am long over the "falling out" this piece and I had. I think it really good. It will be my counteroffer if Jeff at Wooster finds what I sent him too forbidding.

I'm glad that you have been so busy Karl!  And looks like you've got a number of promising performances of some of your works in the near future.  :)

Thanks! Not to be a wet blanket in my own thread, but I've learnt not to count chickens, while remaining hopeful for the eggs.

Quote from: Karl Henning on March 22, 2025, 03:10:28 PMIt is a while since I did any pre-compositional work on paper, but here's a case where I think I want a sheet of paper to help me visualize and sketch the musical architecture [of the Op. 199]. The fact is, I haven't yet "heard" what I want to do with the choir. So I think the page will be a good aid.

Well, I did wind up listening to the entire "Henning First" and dadfrazzanabit, I like it!
Not this month, to be sure, but I see myself writing a Fourth Symphony. I'd prefer that it it not be "on spec" as all the first three have been, but bugger 'em, at some point I am just going to write that "Henning Fourth." for orchestra? For band? We shall see.
