Upon the joint suggestion of Carol and Peter, I've made a start on a new flute duet. I'm one minute in.

And well, since I just pardoned myself for seeming to procrastinate on the Op. 199, I made some headway tonight on the Op. 197. My first thought was a Fantasia on "A Laugh for Rory" (a number which Kirk wrote and played for his infant son, and a track which my parakeet enjoys) for the Recorders, which I might then adapt for the Henning Ensemble. I immediately perceived that if I kept to that thought, it would be a piece too challenging for the recorders, and of insufficient interest for the, erm, Henningtonians (a barbarous neologism coined by Peter, but which seems to stick around.) I therefore resolved to write two distinct pieces, both based on the same Rahsaan Roland Kirk number, but each tailored to its proper group.

A little more work, and ready to proceed.

I may have mentioned that the Lutheran parish with which I've come to affiliate myself is engaged in combining with the parish in Malden. Malden is joining many other communities in having a Porch Fest. My friend Greta plays in a recorder ensemble, and they're considering playing for the Porch Fest, so I'm going to arrange a couple of my pieces to suit: Surfing an Earthquake (for three recorders) and Yesterday's Snow (for three recorders and bassoon.)

A little bit late, but I saw this article in yesterday's Boston Globe. A subscription is needed, so a link wouldn't work, but I snagged a couple of sections that I hope are readable. Porchfests are a great return to the past when music was a social activity engaged in by friends and family, but like anything else, it can get out of control.

For several reasons, I don't think the recorder ensemble will be involved in Porchfest. So, really, it has simply proved an occasion for me to supply them with some Henningmusick.
