NYM Symphony No.25
Moscow PO, Yablonsky

This CD would be a great introduction to Miaskovsky's music. The 24th Symphony, in memory of his friend, is deeply felt and No.25 has a most characteristically soulful tune, a few minutes into the first movement.

My original posting in the buy and sell thread.

I am in the process of culling a lot of CD'S from my collection, and want to know if anyone is interested. Its meant for Europe only, preferably The Netherlands. The CD's are free, all in pristine condition and in plastic sleeves instead of jewel cases, so they take little room, apart of course from the big boxes. You have to collect them, sending them would defeat the purpose. Music from the middle ages into the 20th century, many OOP.
Otherwise they go into the trash bin.
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Joining your listening as a first foray into non-Svetlanov recordings of these symphonies.

I am well aware that it's the dialogues which propels the action in operettas, but hearing a 5-minute dialogue in German after every 3-minute aria or 2-minute chorus is a horrendous experience. I stopped after half-hour of aural torture. I will get rid of the dialogues, which I don't understand anyway, and listen only to the musical numbers in an interrupted flow. Prima la musica poi le parole!

Enjoying the music divorced from story (I know that's subversive.) I subsequently read a synopsis of the action, which has neither my blessing nor my curse. Overall a clear positive, and at the cost of a scant three clams, too. Thank 'ee!

Interesting that the last movement of the 24th uses a motif which reminded me of the Shostakovich 12th. The Shostakovich is of course much later.
