HAYDN: The Masterworks (2004, Brilliant Classics) 40 CD box set

Going for nearly $100 on Amazon but I picked up a very good copy for under $20 at my local music shop. Discogs lists the credits and offers somewhat better prices than Amazon. The minuses are that none of the string quartets are included and only about half of the symphonies but what is included is nicely selected. I already have two great sets of the complete string quartets and I'm not sure if these are the best of his symphony output, but we'll see.

No string quartets? Return it because of a manufacturer's defect!

Seriously: that's a nice bargain.

That's like presenting "Mozart - The Masterworks" with no operas, or "Schubert - The Masterworks" with no Lieder: the top of absurdity.  ;D

They probably included the complete baryton trios?  ;D

No, they included the almost complete piano sonatas (9 CDs), which is really absurd. Good as they are, few of them can be considered masterworks in the same league as the string quartets from the Op. 20 onward.

Yes some of Haydn's string quartets were essential listening in my Music 101 course!  If it makes the cut for a class like that, it should make the cut for a big box masterworks.

I took advantage of a Christmas discount coupon jpc was kind enough to send me... :)

A new release of Maderna's music is always a must for me, and every performance of the "open form" Serenata per un satellite is different and new.

This CD includes Domenico Belli's Orfeo dolente, which Maderna would conduct in the same programme as his (fragmentary) Hyperion.

Two operas from the 1930s that have lapsed into oblivion (along with their composers)

I don't really need yet another recording of Berio's Folk Songs, and Sequenza III has not yet "clicked " with me, but having a new recording of the beautiful O King!, and this CD includes some choral miniatures unknown to me (I think they are world première recordings).

A very Italian order!

Just ordered - hopefully it will be in time for the holidays:

And thnx to traverso, for posting a Christie recording of Charpentier's seasonal music I wasn't  familiar with!  :D
The reissue is confusingly renamed, but it is the same recording.

I love Christie in Handel's operas and Mozart's masses so even though I just listened to this work, I'll give that recording a try soon!

And at 8€, I had no reason to wait any longer.

For anyone interested in sampling/streaming, it's one of the Hyperion recordings that has now made it to Spotify.
