Quote from: AnotherSpin on June 17, 2024, 10:50:31 PMMusic of a quite experimental nature like Schnittke, Gubaidullina, Edison Denisov, etc. was performed and sold on LPs in the USSR.

Was that more in the 70s? Ligeti was 50s.

Disc 9: Magnificat Primi Toni alla quatta più alta, Magnificat Sexti Toni
Manuel Tomadin plays the restored 1674 organ by Luca Neri of the Collegiata San Nicolò in Collescipoli.

I was starting to wonder if this set was not too much of the same thing, but this disc made me sit up again and listen. What a beautiful organ!

I noticed that Harry listend to the same disc two years ago and was pleased with it as well.  :D

A fantastic orchestration of the organ work of the same name from Schmidt. Since I'm not much of a fan of the organ, I'm glad this orchestration exists.

I agree about the work - a real rarity in the Schmidt recorded orchestral catalogue.  But that apart I think this Naxos/Schmidt cycle is very fine.  Not heard the recent Paavo Jarvi cycle which caused a stir but that's because I'm happy with this Sinaisky.

Correct, I was well pleased with this organ! And I am glad you like it too.

@Que was in feathers about this recording, and he was right to be so. Outstanding performance of the Cappella Mariana, without doubt! This CD is dedicated to the sacred madrigals, and it is a privilege to listen, and to grasp all the artistry and absolute beauty of of these compositions from the late 16th century. Excellent and detailed sound!

A classic to my ears, and quite wonderful too. Holmes his Violin is positively singing and swinging, and the Orchestra is never far behind. Thomson knew how to handle the material at hand, and  Chandos knew from the beginning how to make a good recording, which you can hear clearly. I remember how happy I was when Harty's music was released, and I still am holding all of the releases in high regard.
Despite all wanderings, happiness is always found within a small radius, and Harty's music belongs to what I call happiness.

I am very satisfied with this performance and recording. It puts this composer in the right frame of interpretation, which so often is not the case with other performances. And besides, I love his music.

I love the series with his music, and did not nearly play it as much as I wanted to, so now is the day to start anew. I understood from one of my contacts at Chandos, that they did not sell as well as they expected, a bit of a disappointment so to say. There is no reason to dislike them. The music is excellent, the performances sublime, and SOTA sound to boot. It is a virtual feast to listen to this music. Honestly!

I was fortunate to hear Ralph Holmes in a chamber setting (Finchcocks). Lovely man and his premature passing very sad.

Yeah, the Sinaisky series is quite good, but I like both Järvi cycles, Luisi and the newer one with Jonathan Berman (w/ the BBC National Orchestra of Wales) --- are you familiar with the Berman?

Many thanks for this, I could indeed find no info about this organ. You solved the riddle.

Indeed it was a sad to hear about his premature passing, for he had that special "It". A lovely tone, beautiful bowing technique, and the ability to express every ounce of detail with the greatest care.
