Quote from: JBS on July 27, 2024, 11:21:16 AMWhat about the European Amazons?
I checked Amazon Japan as most likely to have a cheaper price, but instead they're superexpensive: 99,000 yen plus shipping--works out to about $650.
I got frustrated with Amazon.de as they were charging me European VAT and Texas sales tax both, but maybe .fr or .it do not have that bug.

EDIT: 410 euros from Italy, third party sellers only from France

Quote from: Brian on July 27, 2024, 10:35:28 AMHas anyone seen the BIS complete Bach vocal works box available in the USA for under $375 or so? It's $310 at Europadisc plus $67 shipping, but that extraordinary shipping charge still makes it $100 cheaper than Amazon USA. $475 at Amazon, sold out at ImportCDs and ArkivMusic. I am seeing $310 with free shipping from MovieMars but have never ordered directly from them, only as an Amazon third-party seller...maybe someone here can recommend them?

I've seen nothing but negative comments about MovieMars over the years on this forum.  I would not trust them.  They have a habit of listing things they don't have to look like they have the cheapest and then cancel your order.  The fact that they don't have an image for that combined with that observation (both personal and what others have reported)... I don't trust them.  I think Europadisc is the best bet.  And probably the lowest you'll see.  It is a limited edition, and I expect the price to start going back up again.

I have actually purchased quite a few recordings from MovieMars over the years.

I checked the quality of the products I have received from them just now, and they were all in very good shape and as listed. Of course, I could have gotten lucky, but also, I am not hard to please.

That said, I usually use MovieMars as a last resort, where it is 1. something difficult to find, 2. they have multiple items I am looking for, or 3. prices are outrageous and they greatly undercut others.

10 symphonies, a few concertos and sundry orchestral pieces. This is mildly frustrating as I already own symphonies 2 (from another label), as well as 5, 6, 7 and 10 from the original Guild discs, now licensed to Brilliant Classics. I'm not interested into Brun's complete works but I wanted to at least get to know the remaining numbered symphonies. Alas, the Guild discs are either oop or available only as expensive imports - like 2 of those = the price of the 10-disc Brilliant set...

Another Swiss composer I really like. Another hard-to-find-at-a-decent-price Guild disc...

Didn't Arkiv go out of business years ago? When did it return?

Their website crashed and stayed down for a long time but they're some sort of subsidiary to Naxos of America (at least that's where all the customer service emails come from). I don't know what their problem is: but it's become a guessing game as to whether your order ever gets shipped.

Oohhhh, thanks for the reminder, they still haven't shipped my Solomons Haydn from May!

I'm surprised at how forgiving you are! Frequent shipping later than two business days is a bannable offense when I sell on eBay. And I don't know of any business, large or small, that would think it was fine to wait weeks or even months to ship a purchased product (except for back orders).

There is a distinction to be made for waiting weeks for an order from overseas. That delay is on the shipping side and not on the seller.

Too bad the current website doesn't resemble the old one. The old one was great for browsing by composer > work. The current site just shows me 886 unsorted items when I select "Mozart" for example.

It was pointed out to me (by @Brian, maybe) that Presto has a similar functionality to archiv's old drill-down search. Click classical, composer, select a composer and you can access a list of all recorded works, with links the pull up a list of all available recordings.

I didn't know that! I'm so happy to have that feature. By the way, you can do the same on Idagio, and you don't need a subscription.

Update: ArkivMusic claims they are expecting more copies to arrive in one to two weeks. Hmmmmmm...

I'm a Kempff fanatic, and this set has been on my radar for a while.

I have a lot of it in various releases, but it is nice to have it all organized in one place, and there is some material included that has not been on CD (according to the release notes).

The thing that put me over the edge is noticing that importcds.com had it for about $10 less than any other site I had investigated.

Cool!  May I ask what you ended up paying for it?

$47.78, and they charge $2.99 shipping. There was an offer from Amazon Global Marketplace for about $54, but that disappeared and everyplace else seems to have it for about $57, some with free shipping.

You must have grabbed the last copy, because they now list it as back order with delivery in mid September.

The two lowest offers on Amazon MP are from Movie Mars and Oxfordshire, both vendors I've had problems with (although Oxfordshire is relatively honest)

Sorry about that. I've used oxfordshire in the past with no problems, besides slow international shipping.
