You'd change your surname,  surely?

Quote from: Madiel on September 19, 2024, 10:52:40 PMPD is a lovely person on here, and if anybody has any other way to contact her please do!

Way behind the curve as I admit only reading this thread occasionally. I am able to contact PD and will do so.

Quote from: Szykneij on September 26, 2024, 04:59:14 AMI have difficulty understanding why members go through the trouble of deleting their accounts, especially if they're not attempting to make a statement. The forum says I've been a member since 2007 when the new software was installed, although I've continually been here even longer than that. I don't post much, but I generally check in at least once a day to see if there's anything of interest. There are stretches where life dictates I need to focus on other things and I might not log in for a while, but I don't feel the need to delete my account. I certainly appreciate GMG and would feel a loss if it was gone, but if an on-line forum becomes one of the most important things in someone's life, that seems like a red flag to me. There's more to enjoy in the real world, and more to worry about as well.
It's certainly not the most important thing to me.  I have my own life, but I'm not certain that you as an older white male and me (not a spring chicken) understand what I have been through and experienced in life and how the various comments hurt (maybe like adding them up to little cuts of a knife).  I love talking to folks about music and it matters to me.

I've always been kind to you and tried to be supportive (including the ephemera thread), so am having a hard time understanding why you are saying what you did..and maybe misunderstanding it?  Words matter.

Wishing you the best and talk to me,

K

First of all, I'm glad you're still here and agree that you have been and are one of the kindest and most pleasant posters on the board. My comments weren't pointed specifically at you, but in response to what has transpired over the 485 pages of this thread.

I understand that some posters (apparently including the one that caused you to leave) quit for the attention. They announce they're leaving and delete their account. Other posters respond and say how sorry they are, so the individual comes back and gets more attention. Then, by behaving badly, gets more attention again, quits again, and the cycle continues.

Others find GMG isn't for them and delete their accounts, never intending to come back.

What I don't get is when someone deletes their account because they want to focus on other music, are going away for a few months, are busy at work, or for some other temporary reason, knowing they will resume posting at some time. Perhaps they want to remove the temptation to post?

At any rate, I'm someone who prefers to fade off into the sunset instead of leaving with a bang. I was glad I retired from my job during COVID and avoided the obilgatory retirement extravaganza I would have otherwise had.

Unfortunately, there are people who can't function in polite society who, either by ignorance or malice, post hurtful things. Words definitely hurt. I was unaware of the comments that caused you to leave as I wasn't reading that thread, but based on what others have said, I'm sure you were justified in being offended.

But, we also need to be careful that written words without the inflection, body language, and facial expressions of spoken words can often be misinterpreted, and posts in a thread aren't always as clear as the writer might have intended. I understand what you meant, but another person might have read your "older white male" reference above differently.

So, my apologies if you felt my previous post was being critical of you. I should have made it clear I was speaking of things in general and not about your most recent departure. My best to you, also.

Very well said.

This is easily the best run forum I've ever been a part of.

I find the "complaints" about it hilarious.

What if your great struggle is that you're NOT engaged? :-\
