Quote from: LKB on December 12, 2024, 02:58:14 AMMahler created the Eighth in an impressively short period during the early Summer of 1906 ( it's premiere didn't occur until 1910, and was Mahler's final triumph in Europe ). Remarkably, Mahler seems to have left the work virtually untouched once it was completed. Reger's work wasn't composed until 1908, so Mahler could not have been aware of it while he was working on the Eighth.

I should have checked, sorry. I'd assumed for some reason that the Reger was earlier. If anyone's got a good Mahler biography I'd be keen to know if it says anything about his view of Reger (I think he hated Reger's op 144b Requiem -- I'm not sure where I've picked that up from.)

No worries, just the other day I mistook Alan Civil for Barry Tuckwell...  ::)

I've decided to jump back into performing, one last time, as a chorister in Mahler's Symphony no. 2. While this won't be my " Swan song " ( I've agreed to continue in the chorus for Faure's Requiem in the Spring ) as a singer, it'll be my final shot at the Resurrection.

I'm excited!  ;D

How nice!  What orchestra?

A local community orchestra ( actually, the very ensemble a certain rather notorious critic has played with ). I've been to one concert they gave a few years back and was fairly impressed. They've been through all of the Mahler symphonies twice, and I'm optimistic.

I found nothing in my copy of Fischer. The mammoth four volume La Grange is probably the place to look, but at over £100 a volume it's perhaps not such an appealing prospect.

Has there ever been a recording of Das Lied sung in English?

I ask because it's a great favourite of mine, and I have many different recordings, but I'm trying to imagine what it would sound like in English.

A perfectly valid quest. Now I'm intrigued...

The extensive Wikipedia page makes no mention of one. Though it does note someone translated the work into Cantonese.

My first rehearsal for the Resurrection took place last night.

I sang reasonably well, and the chorus is already showing signs of its potential. If no disaster befalls us, I think we have a good shot at delivering a worthy effort for the performance.  8)

Was the orchestra present or not yet?

The concert is over a month away, so we won't be with the orchestra for at least a few weeks.

I'm going to see M3 in the cinema next Saturday. :)  Atmos. Bergen Philharmonic under Gardner, from Festspillene i Bergen 2023.

How cool! Especially to see it on the big screen.

And I didn't realize that Bergen does streaming. The next one is in about 5 hours, with Strauss, Beethoven, and Rachmaninov, which I'm going to try to watch. (Work may disrupt that plan.)

So thank you for putting yet another source of live concerts on the radar!
