Brian

First listen to this music, which (as usual for Hahn) is of great delicacy and fragile beauty.

Bernhard Forck

From this set -

I couldn't possibly post everything I've been listening to on this thread (and I'm definitely not going to either), but this is exquisite so far.

Karl Henning

Listened again to Bolet playing the Liszt b minor Sonata. Following that directly with Zappa's synclavier piece H.R. 2911 was just the trip I needed today.

An excellent introduction! Berman's recording is the first Années I've ever listened to, it is such a fine, suggestive interpretation that it's impossible not to admire it.

I have that set and have very positive notes in my listening journal about the Partitas and the transcription of the chaconne for solo violin.

Volume 2 of the CPO Radio Music series, disc one . Strictly orchestral stuff, no vocals. Suites from the pen of Toch, Schreker, Künneke. Fun stuff but not totally memorable, except the Künneke suite, which contains a hit tune from the 1920s I immediately recognized. Funny, because I knew nothing from this composer before putting the cd in the player. Once again production values are top notch. Very detailed notes, period photographs, 50-page glazed paper booklet. Go CPO !

A lot of Yun Isang lately, but in particular:
  • Concerto for flute and chamber orchestra
  • Flute quartet

And I just ordered the scores for both.

The flute quartet is particularly interesting. It's four flutists, though they play all the supernumeraries (piccolo, alto flute and bass flute in addition to the standard C flute, but, I think, no contrabass flute). I think it's only in the fourth movement (my recording is, annoyingly, one track) that each player is on a different range. The first movement, for example, is two bass flutes and two altos. Some very interesting textures emerge in this piece.

The flute concerto is quite sparse and transparent.

This new Jerusalem Quartet recording is stellar!
