There's many people here I'm missing, since my own return after prolonged illness, but one name for now: who knows what happened to our Polish friend Maciek (forgot his nickname)?
... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

@hopefullytrusting I hope you reconsider leaving. It would be sad to see you go out this way. Please think about returning --- just ignore those who give you grief.

Yes, I miss his contributions. I believe I just had started posting on GMG when he was posting regularly and then he just stopped. IIRC, he is married and had a child, which is perhaps a good reason as any for him to find his time limited and not contribute any longer. But it is a shame he never came back or, at least, to pop in and say "hello".

Perhaps, one day, he will return and, Johan, I hope that you're feeling better now and things have improved for you.

Does anyone know what happened to @TheGSMoeller (aka Monkey Greg)? It seems he hasn't been active since 2022. A shame as I always enjoyed his contributions.

It was a true pleasure to chat with most of you, but the negativity on here, for me, I find soul sucking, so I need a break, probably a long one.

:)

One does sometimes benefit from a break; hope to see you here again in future.

Quote from: JBS on April 07, 2025, 12:14:46 PMI do hope Philo (the name I know best) doesn't take too long a break. There are members who will be missed and he is one.

But there are threads I totally ignore and members I try to ignore, in preference to donning the cyberspace version of a hazmat suit.

Regarding Todd: US tax season lasts another week, and there's all the new tariffs to sort out, and if my memory is correct his job involves both. So I expect him to be away from here a bit longer. He does generally step away from the forum during the winter.

He'll have an absolutely swell time with those tariffs, I'm pretty sure...  8)

Time wasting and needless arguments over a pointless game thread. I don't get it...

It wasn't called a game thread. And it was claimed not to be pointless.

I said it was pointless and the creator of the thread did not like that.

Honestly, I'm beginning to feel that people around here wouldn't care if somebody sold a fluffy toy as a cure for cancer because it genuinely was a fluffy toy.  Theranos would have been fine, if only Elizabeth Holmes hadn't made the silly claim that her blood test was useful, because the drawing of blood was harmless.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to do one of those fun quizzes where they capture your personal data and use it to guess your passwords. Because they were honest about the purpose.

Yes, I've been wondering for quite some time about Greg, Herr Sock Monkey. Always enjoyed his contributions, participation and wit.

Herr Sock Monkey. Probably the best handle I have ever seen.

You are comparing someone who defrauded people out of hundreds of millions of dollars and endangered peoples lives by peddling faulty medical tests to someone who started a pole here that you didn't think was what he said it was. Well thank god you've saved us from that, even if you've driven two members off the board.

It's called using hyperbole to get people thinking about the importance of dealing with what something is and also what it's claimed to be.

It's quite bizzare to have people now declaring the series of threads was useless. You know what, most of you didn't bother saying it was useless. Two of us did. So to the extent I drove someone away, it was by actually saying what you were all thinking.  We're not dealing with what I thought, we're dealing with what LOTS of people have subsequently revealed they thought. People lining up to say they couldn't see the point and that it didn't make sense.

Apparently the lesson most people here learned from reading Hans Christian Andersen was that you shouldn't point out the emperor has no clothes. Just admire the procession. But then maybe after the fact admit that you knew he was naked.

When the story only got as far as the procession because of all the people before that who didn't say anything.

The goal wasn't to get the emperor to leave. The goal was to get the emperor to put some goddamn clothes on. But you, all of you, would rather watch while the emperor angrily declares he's wearing the most beautiful suit and that Andrei and I just don't have the wit to see how beautiful it is.

The appropriate response to a thread which is useless is to ignore it and it drops off the bottom of the thread lists.

The goal wasn't to make the emperor go away or to just wait until he went away. The goal was to get the emperor to put some clothes on. I was trying to get what was useless to become useful.

If you think the appropriate response is to leave him naked until he's left your neighbourhood, that's on you.
