Der lächelnde Schatten

Last work for the night --- Szymanowski Mythes, Op. 30

Der lächelnde Schatten

Alright, one last work for the night --- Vaughan Williams A Pastoral Symphony

One of the most individualistic symphonies ever conceived. I cannot think of anything that sounds remotely like it.

Someone I know once compared Tubin's 4th Symphony to it.

Best performance IMO and my favourite Rawsthorne disc:

Spanish Baroque, in Neapolitan-ish style. The composer was a music professor at the University of Salamanca.
Good performance. Nice.

Which is why I would argue it is RVW's greatest symphony.......

Mookalafalas

Wow. What touch. I'd never heard of her; but she's a great find.
It's all good...

Her Chopin Nocturnes are excellent.

Mozart keyboard variations, K.500 and K.501

The K.501 are for piano 4-hands, and I have to admit my interest went up when I found there was a recording by Perahia and Lupu.

A brand new disc and a first listen.....

A decent interesting programme very well played hidden under a cover that would make you think at first glance it was a disc of film themes perhaps....  Actually they are 3 live performances of The Korngold Violin Concerto - good but not the best version by any means, the Elena Kats-Chernin concerto in its premiere recording (it was written for Emily Sun) which is lovely and interesting and sounds great.  Finally a pointless inclusion of a perfectly decent version of the Schindler's List theme.

Kats-Chernin's music is well worth getting to know - a quirky individual voice and always attractive to listen to.  Quite accessible, not "profound" or cerebral but I like her music a lot.

Unfortunately the national classical radio station does her music to death. Australian and accessible? Perfect. Let's play her shorter pieces at every possible opportunity.

To be honest I'd probably be more interested if I hadn't heard her name quite so many times when I happen to have the radio on.

First listen to Georges Lentz's violin concerto and it's by some way the most I've been impressed by a work of his.

It's a somewhat episodic 35-minute single-movement structure that gets bleaker as it goes on--the last third of it being as dark in mood as any violin concerto I recall. Definitely a work I'll be revisiting soon.

Interesting comparison. I think RVW's Pastoral is so singular that there's simply nothing that sounds like it. The way it was constructed and the flow of the musical narrative is truly something to behold.

I once spoke to another RVW fan on another forum who made this very same statement. Personally, I would be reluctant to make such a claim because I love the others so much. Symphony No. 5, for example, holds a special place in my heart.
