This one made me both laugh and cry.  Just watch it and be thankful for the couple that rehabed it and their kindness and dedication.  What a wonderful couple. 😍

One story I absolutely love, I adore my dolphin neighbors.  They are interestingly "aware" and very social.  For example, they only have one calf at a time that a mom will raise till it has sexual maturity.  But in pods, they often find a mom with five same age calves.  This means one mom is babysitting to let the other moms have a day off.  Just an example of how sophisticated their social structures are.  Another example, there was a story in the news not long ago that a skipper found a group of dolphins approaching him and trying to get his attention than led him to a swimmer in distress who had been pulled out to the open ocean and was drowning.  This means they understand the boat had someone controlling it who was the same species as the swimmer in distress, that they recognized her distress, that they had empathy and took organized action to resolve the issue.  There are many examples like this.

Great stories!  :)  What wonderful creatures!

From the BBC:  Smuggler caught with hundreds of tarantulas strapped to body

"A man has been caught trying to smuggle hundreds of endangered spiders and insects out of Peru.

Officials stopped the 28-year-old Korean citizen, who had hidden the animals about his person, as he tried to leave the capital Lima.

The creatures are now being cared for by wildlife protection authorities."

I recognized some of those animals, but am unsure of a few of them...was there some sort of ferret there?  Weasel?

Very clever idea in any event!  And kind!  :)

I was pleased to read that Malipiero composed with an owl perched on his shoulder.

Quote from: Karl Henning on November 24, 2024, 02:45:47 PMI met some rescue owls this Thursday last. Marvelous birds.

Quote from: vandermolen on November 24, 2024, 11:57:50 PMI gather that Malipiero's home was some kind of sanctuary for animals.

One of the birds I met (I didn't take his pic, though) is a Western Great Horned Owl. We were told they like to prey on skunks, that white stripe making them an easy target from above. As a result, said the handler, any Great Horned Owl niffs of skunk. This fellow had attacked a skunk with a lot of fight in him. the bird was reported found on the road, the skunk had torn his right leg and foot terribly. The bird had to go into surgery twice. He's bounced back very nicely. The chap in this photo is a barred owl named Breezy, who is a very charming fellow. One of his eyes is no good, so he couldn't be released back into the wild, either.

Good to hear that you enjoyed your avian visit!  Isn't it so cool to see them up close?  :)

Yes! I was only sorry that I had no voice. I like to interact vocally with birds.

This video of photo awards for comical photos of animals made me laugh and smile (I trust that all of the animals were unhurt--the couple that were in *awkward situations).  Sounds like they (the photographers) are trying to help conservation efforts.   :)

*Checking a bit further, it sounds like red squirrel was just detaching itself from the tree in order to enter its hole (though it looks at first glance like it's stuck trying to get in).

I used to love my squirrel neighbors.  One was so cute, I named her Harriet.  She recognized me and was very patient and I recognized her.  I would give her a nut bringing it closer and closer to me till she eventually got comfortable enough to take it from my hand.  She would start coming every day and patiently wait for me to give her a nut.  Unfortunately it's been years since she made her daily visit.  She must have passed on but I randomly see other squirrels that aren't her but seem to have some knowledge of me...they must be her descendants.
