Any ideas?

J.Z. Herrenberg

It's a very famous piece. A waltz, but I can't remember by whom...

Thanks for helping me out...  ;)

Why not introduce yourself here, you are interesting enough:

Thanks Jezetha, ;)

It's the Mazurka, by the way:

The Waltz is also very well known. Last year, I went in to a second hand record shop in Delft (NL) and searched between a pile of classical 45 rpm's. There I found a 7# record from 1902 with this waltz. It's those records that were used on the gramophone pictured in the "His masters voice" logo:

Will give a post in the "introduction" forum soon...

Greetings,
Rolf

Thanks, Rolf (and for your upcoming intro). I did have my doubts about that 'waltz' designation. Mazurka it is.

Hello, Rolf!

This is a great pleasure. You may not be aware of this, but your site has many fans on GMG. And you can count me among them! 8)

Have fun here!

Small world, Maciek. I have 'known' Rolf as a parent at my daughter's school for 4 years (his son is in the same class). And only 2 weeks ago I discovered he and I had something in common: a love of classical music... !

I think I discovered the otterhouse site thanks to Andre (Lilas Pastia) who is a regular there as well. I download almost every single installment. (These last months I've been missing stuff because my computer is constantly out of order ::))

I listened to another recording of this and I must say, it sounds like it was ripped off from Das Rheingold. The first thirty seconds of the prelude and 6 minutes before Das Rheingold ends are similar enough, and they were even composed at roughly the same time, that it can't be a coincidence.

The thread is going in all sorts of directions, so I'm asking this just to make sure I understand correctly: you mean to say you suspect that the Mazurka from Coppelia is a rip-off of something from Wagner?

More or less, yes.

Maciek

Hm, I haven't checked Das Rheingold but somehow this seems a bit improbable - I don't think this piece is the sort of thing anyone (even Delibes ;D) would have to rip off from anywhere. It's the sort of standard mazur that composers such as Moniuszko or Kurpiński wrote in droves decades earlier. (And frankly, as much as I actually like Delibes and find this very charming, I'd say they did a much better job. ;D) But I guess I shouldn't be saying anything without checking the Wagner first... ::) 0:)
