Maybe it's painted on the inside of the instrument?

That begs more questions! Like who thinks "You know what this lute harpsichord really needs?"

I don't think it is.

Maybe it's there because some marketing executive thought it would attract punters.   It looks OK in a safe sort of way, that's what the target market feel comfortable with  . . .

It's not. You can see the instrument from different angles here:

Maybe they mistook it for a St George's dragon ..

The dragon comes from the inside painting of the harpsichord/lautenwerk maker Keith Hill's magnum opus.

Which is a late 20th century imitation of 18th century chinoiserie, itself an imitation/caricature of Chinese/Japanese decorative style. :)

Better artwork this time.....

Not sure about that... But a recording of two Agricola masses is more than welcome!  :)

And also misnamed, given that at least two CDs extend past Schönberg.

...and Kurt Weill's and Roberto Gerhard's respective relationships with Vienna weren't really that intimate, AFAIK.  ;D

FEBRUARY 2025

Apple seems to have replaced BIS' graphic designers with whoever is choosing the minimal effort stock photo + MS Word Calibri and Arial fonts nowadays. Very cool that they've signed the Jerusalem Quartet, however.

Kurtag plays piano on the last two real tracks; the interview is 18 minutes in German with printed English and French translations in the booklet.

"The Rhapsody deals with themes of love and loss, considered by Goodyear to be "the most intimate piece I have ever written." Elsewhere, the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso constitutes a composition written in the spirit of Mendelssohn but inspired by the rhythmic and metric vigour of Sub-Saharan Africa."

André

The Cramer sonatas are worth exploring. Not to be overlooked even if the composer's name doesn't ring a bell.
