Finally decided to pull the trigger.  The finale of the first symphony literally brought tears to my eyes.  Barbirolli really works for me in Sibelius!

I used to own an older mastering in the saintly days of yore.  The newer remastering that I've been streaming off and on over the past few years sound much better.

Me too. I had a hard time with Sibelius til I heard the Sibelius cycle.
It's all good...

Another cycle that made a big impression on me was the Maazel, not the more famous Wiener Philharmoniker cycle, but the later one with the Pittsburgh Symphony.

Yes, it's great. I'm sorry that Barbirolli, like Bernstein and Stokowski, never recorded Tapiola.

I knew I'd get this sooner or later, and the price on amazon.es seemed right...

Quote from: Spotted Horses on November 21, 2023, 07:36:38 AMWent for the Reiner Box. Missing it when it was first released was a big mistake. 60+ discs for less than $10, worth the risk of sending my credit card into to a previously unknown (to me) site in Eastern Europe and FLAC files of slightly murky provenance.
Just trying to understand what you are saying.  Do you think that Supraphon is questionable itself (meaning the record label) or were you concerned that the site was not legit or?

@JBS is that a box set of Herreweghe Bach's phi recordings?  How big?  The Buchbinder Haydn set is nice, I bet you'll like it.  I don't consider it at the level of Brendel or Richter but it is very good.

The Herreweghe set has 10 CDs issued between 2011 and 2020

There's a companion set of Sacred Music which overlaps a bit (the B Minor Mass)

Or if you prefer a 6 CD set of which only 2 CDs are not also in one of the other two sets

The Buchbinder was under $25 and I have no complete modern piano set of Haydn's sonatas, so that was an easy decision.

It is the fact that there is Supraphon.com, which is what you'd expect from a record label site, listings Supraphon recordings, but there is supraphoneonline.cz, which sells everything at sometimes outrageously low prices. The Reiner set in FLAC format is $261 from Prestomusic.com, but 199 Koruna (about $9) from supraphononline.cz. The discs are presented in a different order than in the official RCA CD set and download. Makes me wonder what the license deal is between supraphononline.cz and RCA (Sony) and what then source of the FLAC files is. Maybe due to some peculiarity in copyright law they are considered public domain in the Czech Republic and the file would be "bootleg" under copyright laws of other countries.

This comment reminds me of the way the other Czech label, Praga, keeps releasing CDs of old DG or EMI performances where they clearly do not own the copyright. (Like Michelangeli Ravel concertos.)

I noticed that the Reiner RCA set is available for streaming and I listened to a bit of the Tragic Overture, which I had listened to in the supraphononline.cz download. It sounded more or less the same, but the lossless streaming version was louder. Usually when I go back and forth between a FLAC I've ripped and the streaming they sound absolutely identical. Makes me think there is something dicey about the FLAC files coming from supraphononline.cz. Maybe they did something dumb like generate the FLAC files from an mp3 version.

And I could have saved the princely sum of $9 by relying on streaming. :)

Black Friday Downloadapalooza.  Since I've never heard the St John thingy, I figured I'd try three different settings.

Dangerously tempting times ahead for me... :o
The quantity and quality of used CDs on offer is going up, prices are going down...

So have I, good stuff.

From the site:

"About Supraphonline

Supraphon launched the Supraphonline digital service on 24 November 2011. It was the first digital store in the Czech Republic that, in addition to the classic MP3 format (in 320 kbps quality), also offered the entire range in the lossless FLAC compression format, which provides recording quality comparable to that on CDs. A year after its launch, the Supraphonline portal received two nominations in the prestigious Czech Internet award – Crystal Magnifier 2012, in the categories Project of the Year and E-commerce Inspiration, which are decided by an expert jury. Since the beginning of 2016, the Supraphonline e-shop has been offering the option of purchasing physical CDs, DVDs and LPs in addition to downloading."
