Quote from: 71 dB on October 20, 2024, 06:36:23 AM* Criterion Collection doesn't release much the type of movies I'm interested of (film critic favourites, especially older films rarely are to my liking much and also they are very expensive! This was the first time I was happy to pay for the release (because this movie has been haunting in my mind for 20 years!).
How do you order Criterion editions in Finland? I have about 100 but I understand that they are not easy to acquire outside the USA. If you order from the company website direct (criterion.com), they have 50% off sales exactly two days per year, and one of them is this upcoming Tuesday Oct. 22.

Bond villains should be psychopaths, of course. So Stromberg having the scientists witness a young lady being fed to a shark minutes  before they themselves are killed in an exploded helicopter is true to form.

Quote from: Madiel on October 20, 2024, 05:45:30 AMI just watched Avengers: Infinity War. One of the more coherent Marvel movies, so quite enjoyable.

One of my favorite scenes in all of the MCU, especially when he catches the spear and the music starts.

I think it's in Alameda.

I have never been so uncomfortable in the theater in my life. (not even for Tim Roth's The War Zone)

I have not seen it since then. I don't think I could handle it.  :o

When I first started watching the video, this song came to my mind (pardon the datedness of the video):

Then I realized that All of the characters in that scene (including the female ones) had super powers.   ;D

p.s.  I know, I'm dating myself too!

ScarJo's Black Widow character doesn't have any powers. She's simply a badass. Neither does Anthonie Mackie's Falcon, the dude flying around with the big wings.  ;D

Also, that song is soooooo good.

I don't know the characters at all.  Is the Black Widow character the woman with the red hair early on in your clip or a different one?  Don't know the movie.  :(

No frowny needed.  ;)

The redhead woman and the robot guy are Scarlet Witch and The Vision. They're being chased by aliens.

The beardy guy across the train is Steve Rogers (Captain America). He shows up with Black Widow, the blonde woman who kicks all kinds of butt (that's ScarJo - her character normally has red hair, except for this movie). Their third guy is Falcon, the dude with the wings. They've come to rescue Vision and Scarlet Witch.

Clear as mud?

Avengers Infinity War and its part 2, Endgame, make up the culmination of almost a dozen years worth of movies. You are not to be blamed for not knowing what's happening. LOL

If you're going to start trying to explain the Infinity Stones, I'm going to need a bigger bag of popcorn.

There really are times when the Marvel Cinematic Universe gets overwrought. But then some of the movies truly earn their sense of being blockbusters.

Mind you, this far in I still think the first Guardians of the Galaxy is my favourite of any of them. For one thing it's easily the funniest.

Last night I watched Late Night with the Devil. It is set in the 70s and is about a talk show host who wants to make his wake back up the ratings and for once beat Johnny Carson. It is Halloween night and the show starts as dull but as the evening progresses things become more and more intense until it is all nightmare fuel.

The Fog (John Carpenter, 1980)

I might have been in a wrong mood, but this movie felt really boring and lame. Disappointing...

Hah! Some movies are better watched privately at home.  ;)

I might "tolerate" this kind movies build around taboo subjects more than the masses, because of my personality type. I consider myself very open-minded and especially social constructs, which evolve with time and vary from culture to culture, religion to religion, country to country don't fully define how I think about various issues. I have my own opinions based on the principles of secular humanism. Sometimes the social constructs in society agree with my opinions, something not so much. This doesn't mean I would do things that are considered bad/illegal. It means I propably can watch movies with taboo topics without the feel of discomfort felt by many others (such as people with socially conservative mindset). Almost all people agree murder is a very bad and wrong thing to do. Despite of this people enjoy violent movies. Hollywood is very good at making violence "entertaining." Meanwhile the topics of the movie Happiness, not your typical Hollywood movie I might add, makes people cringe and feel uncomfortable. Just one example of how we are being brainwashed and conditioned by capitalism...

I wrote multiple paragraphs, and all I did was identify the characters! I think I will let it go at that.  :-[

I hated Guardians when I saw it at the cinema. I thought it was smug and not half as funny as it thought it was.

Now? The three GotG movies are my favorite MCU films. I have come to love the characters and their relationships and their journey. I have enjoyed nearly every Marvel film to some level - hell, I might be the only person who likes Love & War. (Dr. Strange MoM might be the biggest exception, but I will give it another chance one of these days because I am enjoying Agatha so much and could do with more Wanda.)

But the Guardians movies are my favorite.

This was region B UK release by The Criterion Collection. I don't do region A releases meaning all the region A locked US releases don't work for me. I bought this Blu-ray from Amazon.co.uk. In the same order I had also classic Doctor Who season 17 Blu-ray boxset (meaning, the insanely high shipping costs were divided between these two products). In the end Happiness cost me 36.76 euros delivered (about $40) which is pretty insane price, but I have two options: Be without or pay.

To be fair, when a movie does put you in the eyes of a killer in a way that makes them seem kind of sympathetic - like Peeping Tom - it's also uncomfortable.  ;)

Not really re Happiness, but sometimes a movie will hit home so hard in an unexpected way. No matter how much you liked it, you can't watch it again because you don't want to feel what you felt. And you can't even necessarily articulate why. Two for me that way:

Under the Skin (ScarJo)
Rachel Getting Married (Annie Hathaway)

I adore both actresses, and they were both superb in these films. And in both cases, I have never been able to bring myself to watch them a second time. The first one had questions of identity and self-definition that got to me, and the latter was about family relationships and self-destructive behavior that I recognized all too well.

I like feeling things at movies. But not sometimes.  :D

I bought Peeping Tom on Blu-ray January this year. It is a cool movie and I also like its strong colors. Generally I struggle with movies made before 1965 or so (they just feel too old for me and American films suffered from the Hays code up until that point), but Peeping Tom is okay.
