Meneses recorded the cello suites three times (I didn't know the first of these - Japanese issues are often difficult to spot))

1)  (Japan exclusively) Philips 1993

2)  Avie 2004

3)  Azul music 2023

Florestan

Quote from: Kalevala on October 18, 2024, 09:38:23 PMI wasn't familiar with either of the names before....wondering why the differences?  Are you sure that they aren't two different artists?

Cătălin Ilea is a Romanian cellist, so the correct spelling of his name is with diacritics, but he certainly is one and the same as Catalin Ilea.

Quote from: Selig on October 19, 2024, 03:07:02 AMJust got done listening to suites 1 to 3 - I have to echo prémont and say this is a very beautiful interpretation. Satisfying sound too, deep and resonant, unlike the Avie recording.

Interesting. As for the recording sound, I prefer the Avie/2nd recording.

Other recordings I recently listened to: Jean-Max Clement and Eric Kutz.

Worthwhile interpretations somewhat in the romantic spirit.

Kutz, half-romantic. Clement, half-weirdo.  ;D

Try Gavriel Lipkind.

What's your opinion of Mari Fujiwara's first (2000)? Do you recommend it?

I'm not sure I've ever heard it.

An example of fear and warning - if this expression exists in English.

I would say noble and beautiful,  I  really like it. I don't know her second.

BTW her first recording was recorded in the early 1980es, her second recording in the early 2010es.

Sorry, it was released in 1985, not 2000! A review and a pic of cover are below.
Btw, the second photo is a Japanese cover art of the Gendron recording. I use it on my iPod.

Listening to the D minor suite now in her second recording - it sounds very fine indeed. I don't think I have access to her first recording, I'll dig around tomorrow.

Hmm - not sure there is an English word for that. I just thought that Lipkind was half romantic, half weirdo.

100% romantic and 100% weirdo I think.  :D

Well, is "an example to serve as a warning" better?

Probably my 2nd-favourite recording of all.  Though it wasn't love at first sight - took me a while to get there.

Foreboding, or omen?

I think you need to know her second, it's different. Less lyrical and sweet, more "speech like" , almost to the point of being disjointed.

I've been listening to the first and the second - good find @Dry Brett Kavanaugh
