Quote from: Spotted Horses on January 20, 2025, 09:04:40 AMI was briefly in Santa Fe once, for work. Everything has to be Adobe style. Even the target store had an adobe exterior. Once you get inside you could be in Newark, for all you could tell. :)

New Mexico, heaven? Ok, it's hot, but it's a dry heat, like an air fryer. :)

Hey, I'll take *hot and dry over HHH any day!  "HHH" means hazy, hot and humid [though I'd add a fourth H to it myself].

*Preferably in the 80's and not higher!

Here in central VT, we're in the midst of an arctic outbreak as well, but I don't think we'll get down to -32ºC! The coldest lows are forecast for tonight and tomorrow night: -20ºC / -4ºF.

But it's definitely bitterly cold out there.

Hope that your apartment is well-insulated?

I did my shoveling and sanding/salting earlier--at least you, hopefully, don't need to do any of that yourself?  Maybe a tiny bit around your vehicle?  Not certain how that works.

Supposed to get cold here (particularly at night) for a while; please Lord, no burst pipes!

Unimpressive by some standards, no doubt, but by Mobile standards it's Snowpocalypse, Snowmadggedon, The Blizzard of '25!

It last showed here in 2017, but it was insignificant. The only snowfalls I can remember that compare to te current one were in 1973, during my freshman year of college, and 1963, when I was eight years old, but had the measles or mumps or something, so little Wendell couldn't go out and play in it. 69½-year-old Wendell has no inclination to go out and play in it, but it's "purity", and at least I don't have to go to work.

"Heavy snow" is predicted until 7 pm today, and the high will only be 28°F (-2°C), so I'm sure I'll be off tomorrow as well. It's supposed to get up to freezing around noon tomorrow.

Looks like at least one of the weather channels is predicting 3-7 inches?  If you have decent winter clothing and a pair of warm hiking boots, go for a walk and enjoy it!  Obviously, ignore this suggestion if it's blizzard conditions.  I did my shoveling yesterday.  Might do a bit more today.  Didn't measure it, but I think we received about 4 inches.

I might cross the street to check my mail because the US Postal Service's Informed Delivery tells me there are a couple of pieces of mail I might be interested in. Other than that, I'm staying inside with the cats, one of whom just jumped on my lap, so I obviously can't move now.

So, there are some pieces of mail other than junk and bills?  :o

And you must honor and obey the cat gods/goddesses otherwise life in the afterlife will be really rough.

One yearly bill that I knew would be in this week, one of the few I still get by mail, and a postcard with no return address, and a computer label with my name (not just "Occupant" or some such) that I'm curious about.

@Wendell_E  Any idea how much snow you've received so far?  And any news as to the PTB managing to get in some snowplows and sand/salt?

I just heard the local airport's reported 6 inches. And they just said "4-7 inches along the coast", which I can easily believe. I haven't heard anything about snowplows, etc. It'll get above freezing tomorrow, in the low to mid-40s Thursday and Friday, and the 50s and 60 this weekend, so maybe the plan's just to let Ma Nature get rid of the stuff.

Oh, definitely. The county has declared that "all county-maintained roadways and bridges are considered impassable until further notice". I have no intention of seeing for myself.  ;D

Edit: HOLY HELL, HOW DO PEOPLE PUT UP WITH THIS CRAP YEAR AFTER YEAR!!! Is a living wage really worth it?   It does explain all those retirees who move to Florida. And European colonization of Africa and South America.

As predicted, it did finally stop around sunset. A couple of quotes from the Al.com news report:

QuoteThe National Weather Service in Mobile said that as of 6:10 p.m. 7.5 inches of snow had fallen at its office in west Mobile. That broke the all-time record for a snow event of 6 inches in 1895.

The weather service said the city's snowfall also broke its single-day record, which was 5 inches on Jan. 24, 1881.

To be fair, up north, they have actual resources to deal with it. Roads and sidewalks are immediately plowed, salted, and sanded. In the south, where there are zero resources, everything shuts down, and roads are treacherous. Having lived in both places, it is very different. Here in South Carolina, I have to hunker down in my house. When I lived in Pennsylvania, that same storm was just Tuesday as they say.

You can pay dearly though for those services--think town/city budget and also personal budget for clearing of driveways and/or sidewalks if you can't or don't want to do it yourself.

Northern states do indeed have the resources. Back home, at the onset of a storm, Massachusetts goes proactive, with city and state equipment but also hundreds of independent contractors with pickup trucks.
Here in Missouri? 4 inches shuts down everything. They have snow removal equipment but not much.
