Well, it's Christmas Eve, and I am genuinely tickled to re-read this post of 16 years ago (the inaugural year of the blog.)

If you could provide a link, Karl, I think I'd like to listen to it again right now. At Philippa's hospital bedside night and day. I need something to give strength; the beautiful, consoling work of a distant friend might do it.

Merci!

And Happy Hanukkah! From what I understand, it's been twenty years since the start of Hanukkah and Christmas Day are the same; hence some blended (and clever) celebrations for some households.

And whatever you celebrate--or don't--wishing you love and peace.

Although for the sake of precision they are not on the same day. 25 Kislev, the first day of Chanukah, actually corresponds to 26 December, the overlap being the Jewish calendar's definition of day to include the evening before, not the evening after, the daylight component.

As it is, since I work in retail, the fact that I reached Christmas Eve allows me to enjoy Christmas Day with pleasure. Most years, with too many opportunities to see human nature being rather unChristmasy, I arrive at December 24 with the premise that perhaps Scrooge should not have changed his mind. But the upcoming 24 hours of peace and Bach usually restore my mood. And it may have been my last Christmas in the trenches. I will be 66 in March, so I'm seriously considering retirement at some point in the next few months.

Not sure if I mentioned that our next King's Chapel date is 8 April. What I'm thinking is:

Sunshade and Earthquake

Henning, Music for the Un-Hip Hop, Op. 178 (première) 6:30
Alan Westby, The Quiet Girl (revised version) 7:00
Henning, Surfing an Earthquake, Op. 190 (première) 6:30

@SonicMan46 Dave, back in the Deeps of Time (well, 16 years ago) you spoke kindly of the Passion. You also raised justifiable objections to the sound engineering. Well, the recordings process at St Paul's was too casual to justify the noun engineering. I do have a professional recording of Sine Nomine's later performance. Let me see if I can make that generally available.

Well Karl - my memory must have faded from that comment -  ;D   But will look forward to any further postings.  Dave
